Doris Day

I read an article that accused Doris Day of being a traitor to feminism. Has the author even watched Day lately? I've seen 15-20 of her movies and have yet to see anything other than strong, independent female characters. Day waged the on-screen battle of the sexes and either won in each movie or reached a mutually agreeable compromise. She never sacrificed her femininity.

Masculinity

Just as many women are seeking to re-kindle or indeed discover their femininity, many men are doing the same with masculinity: http://fiercegentleman.com/ There are many websites and blogs addressing this topic.

The 100 - dumbass show

We gave up on The 100 TV series almost straight away... There are thousands of people in a space station circling a potentially radioactive Earth, 3 months oxygen supply and only 800 places on the transport ships. So what did they do? They send 100 juvenile delinquents to Earth. Huh? So, they lose 100 places to kids who know how to torture people and spend the whole time pouting, posing or arguing. It was a no brainer show. We switched off and watched Alec Guinness in Father Brown although I must admit that I dozed because my hubby was so warm and cuddly.

Femininity

It is tempting albeit superficial to see femininity as being a question of behaviour, temperament, choice, opinion or attitude. This denies the fundamental biological differences between men and women. Our bodies are different. Man are top heavy, women are bottom heavy. Men have a 3 day sperm cycle, we have a monthly menstruation cycle. The chemical balance of our bodies is not the same; different quantities and nature of hormones...

Masculinity

If a person is angry a lot of the time, their facial muscles will eventually lose their pliability and become moulded to reflect this one emotion. Essentially; the person becomes muscularly fixed and rigid. They look permanently angry and so (according Richard Wiseman in his book Rip It Up) feel angry regardless of circumstance. Similarly, if a woman thinks in a masculine way, experiences masculine emotions and moves their body in a masculine way... they will eventually exhibit masculine facial expressions and masculine body language. Clearly, the reverse is also the case: feminine thoughts, feelings and physicality will encourage a feminine expression. A masculine woman may dress in a feminine fashion but her underlying physical expression remains masculine and this will always show through. Femininity cannot be faked using clothing or make-up or play acting.

Female transvestites

If a man dressed in women's attire he would be called a transvestite, yet many women wear masculine clothes without being labelled the same.

Double standards?

Feminism

According to Genevieve Antoine Dariaux, women seeking sexual equality should achieve it without sacrificing their own femininity. If a woman adopts masculine traits in her quest for equal opportunity and treatment, surely she is undermining her very cause? Aping men is not the aim of sexual equality. We seek equality in all aspects of life, as women, not as faux men. We don't want to be like men. We are not men.

Femininity is an art and we cannot just assume that we possess it. Study, research, insight and practice make us stronger as women and quite distinctly female. Women can be strong, intelligent, resourceful and impressive. In a female way.

St Trinians?

I have just watched the Alastair Sim comedy The Happiest Days of Your Life and have yet to see his St Trinians movies. I'm not sure what to expect. Given Sim's excellent film career, St Trinians seems an odd venture...

A brief Google image search yields soft core teen porn images that seem somewhat poor taste. The actresses may not be teenagers themselves but the aim is clearly to portray teen girls in a sexually provocative manner. Why bother? For whose entertainment?
